Course Listing: TBA -- offered as elective credit at Hampton
Faculty Leader: Margaret Lee and host university faculty
Cost:  $3200
Program description:

This program, The Mother Tongue and Its Dialectal Offspring in the United States, in cooperation with Advanced Studies in England and University College, Oxford, will offer 8 semester hours of credit for a five week program with one course in the History of the English language taught by Hampton University Professor Margaret Lee and a second taught by host university faculty, a choice of English literature (Jane Austen) or Art History (The Triumph of Georgian Bath).

This linguistics course will examine the British connection to present-day American English, focusing on the transatlantic journey of the Mother Tongue and its role as ancestor of specific regional and social dialects spoken in various speech communities in the United States. In order to understand the historical and geographical significance of these dialects, the course will examine the British regions from which their languages originated and the regions in which their speakers settled in the New World. Attention will be given to differences in syntax, semantics, phonology and lexicon that characterize these specific dialects, and attitudes toward them. The language of five distinctive American speech communities will be examined: Appalachian speech (from the English border counties): the speech of the “hoi toiders” on the Outer Banks of North Carolina (from eastern and southwestern England and Scots-Irish influence): the speech of the Chesapeake Bay’s Tangier Island (from Cornwall, England): the speech of the Southern Plains (from the northern counties of Britain): and African American English/Ebonics (originally the result of slaves’ West African languages and white southern speech). The course includes a study trip to Bristol, a major port for the Atlantic Slave Trade in the 18th century, to visit the History of Slavery Museum.
The primary text for the course will be David Hackett Fischer’s Albion’s Seed: Four British Folkways in America (1989).

Program description: Be a literary pilgrim and follow in the footsteps of Goethe, Hawthorne, Byron, Dickens, Twain, James, Wharton, Lawrence, and countless other writers who made Italy the world’s number one literary destination and the subject of great travel literature.
Savor Italy’s legendary (art and architecture, historic cities and picturesque landscapes, wonderful food and drink, friendly people), while exploring the incredibly rich genre of travel writing. We will define travel writing as generously as possible so that participants may pursue their personal interests in a style and form that suits them.
Don’t miss this opportunity for personal and cultural exploration (and three college credits). As that wise and intrepid traveler Saint Augustine said:
